The 38,000 square-foot Performing Arts Center in Kirkwood, Missouri will be a community asset and cultural hub when it opens up in the spring of 2021.

The facility, a regional performing arts center that incorporates a 500-seat house and a 200-seat studio theater, will serve to be an anchor and catalyst for the new downtown Arts & Entertainment District. The overall design on the outside of the building is driven by a “see and be seen” concept and combines a concrete shell wrapped in a glass casing. The concrete shell defines the performance spaces, and the glass curtain wall encloses a two-story atrium lobby.

The architects successfully installed Precast Concrete Structural Panels, Metal Wall Panels, and Structural Silicone Glazed Aluminum Curtain Walls. The design of this Performing Arts Center was developed through critical analysis of materials, creative articulation of space, and pragmatic considerations. Along the inside of the building, abstract patterns or references to nature seemed particularly appropriate for this project since Kirkwood is known as the “Tree City”. The big idea was a play of multiple colors, reveals, and pencil ribs to create texture and shadow that emulate a natural pattern or an abstract interpretation of tree bark. The $25 million dollar project will be an exciting and successful new addition to the new Arts & Entertainment District in Kirkwood.
